Brea, California: A Haven in the West

Author: Maita Yoldi | Date Posted: 10/08/2008

Brea was once dubbed by lifestyle glossy Sunset Magazine as one of the five best places to live in the Western United States, and deservedly so. A rare mix of character: bustling city life with an upbeat momentum becomes tempered by the invigorating sights at the nearby natural wildlife park that the residents dearly treasure.

Brea is uniquely located on the foothills of a plateau in Orange County where once, the priceless rivulets of oil flowed through its land. It was in the big oil boom between the years 1898 to 1940 that Brea and Olinda raked in enough fortune to thrive on and become one of the most progressive cities in Orange County. In the succeeding years, Brea was witness to an emerging lifestyle and culture. Residential communities mushroomed across the valley, so did businesses and establishments. Being strategically positioned at the mid of Southern California, key companies immediately took advantage and made Brea, California their corporate headquarters when the Orange Freeway was opened in the 1970’s. Then came the construction of the gigantic Brea Mall, which held a significant impact on the city’s trade and economy.

The Brea Museum and Heritage Centre holds and preserves the city’s historical treasures; a place where one can bask in the old glory of the grand oil days and take in the culture of Brea’s past. It also serves as a venue for learning and education, exhibits, meetings and banquets. In the same manner, the Brea Historical Park takes every guest back in time though more intimately. All of 12 acres, the park includes the original Olinda Oil Well #1, the field office cum museum containing the original safe, a warehouse and a records vault. The park provides an extraordinary experience as one becomes witness to the sights, sounds and smells of a by-gone era.

Today, Brea is a burgeoning city visited by more than 100,000 people a day, whether to work, to shop or to have some recreation. The famed Brea Mall houses over 175 specialty shops and restaurants and five major retail stores: Nordstrom, Macy’s, Robinson’s-May, Sears and JC Penney. Adjacent to the Brea Mall is the world-class Embassy Suites Hotel, with 299 well appointed rooms, which continues to draw travelers, businessmen and visitors. The full-service hotel is a popular venue for business conferences and conventions.

Brea is also an avid supporter of the arts, having created public art programs since the year 1975. Over 140 artworks have been collected through the years and are all proudly displayed throughout the city. Brea’s public art program has been the source of inspiration for other cities nationwide because of its success and expressed concern for the preservation of art, culture and heritage.
