Capistrano Beach: Living the Laidback Life

Capistrano Beach, California, also known as Capo Beach, is a non-typical ‘beach’ town located along the southern coastlines of Dana Point in Orange County. Perhaps the center of activity has always been the endless stretch of narrow shorelines at the foot of the hills, where many tourists and celebrities have been said to frolic on. Communing with nature seems to be a favorite past time for all the locals, turning the Capistrano Beach lifestyle into a laid back existence.

The secret of Capistrano Beach is, in fact, shunning the tempting advances brought by commerce and technology – and instead, preferring to bask in the ‘small town’ ambiance that has charmed many people from all parts of the world. Along the ridged hills overlooking the shores, many homes have been built, ranging from the modest to the most extravagant. The Capistrano Beach real estate market capitalize on the prime locations atop the cliffs where homeowners can best marvel at the spectacular views.

The public had its first taste of Capistrano Beach County Park in the 1920’s when it was opened to cater to the crowd of locals and guests alike. Although many people have been drawn to the magic of the locale, Capistrano Beach is still considered to have a low rate of tourist visits because of the presence of more famed theme parks in the neighboring areas such as Disneyland and Universal Studios. Travelers come to Capistrano for the purpose of relaxation rather than for recreation or sightseeing.

Hotels and beach cottages are familiar sights in town. One of the popular Capistrano Beach hotels is the Capistrano Beach Resort, situated between the cliffs and the ocean on Pacific Coast Highway. Here, travelers get a premium taste of the Capistrano Beach while in the comfort of luxurious accommodations. Nearby is the Dana Point Harbor where you can dine al fresco at any of the exquisite restaurants, hop on a sports fishing boat, visit The Ocean Institute or simply stroll along its sandy beach.

The remarkable Mission of San Juan Capistrano, a beautiful church with breathtaking architecture, is also a stone’s throw away from the Capistrano Beach. The interesting remnants of the original six-dome ceiling cathedral which collapsed during a great earthquake in the year 1912 give a significant insight into the fascinating history of the mission. Today, a little chapel named Father Serra’s Church remains intact, and is said to be the place where the founding priest once conducted religious services.

During the summer season, Capistrano Beach gets abuzz with events – local townsfolk flock to the shores to bathe under the sun. Refreshment stands offering cold beverages and snacks are opened, little shops selling fishing gear and other beach supplies are at the peak of business, and so are the rental stores for surfboards, bicycle and roller blades. In a nutshell, Capistrano Beach dwellers treasure their proximity to the shores and the simplicity of their lifestyle. After a well-spent vacation, everybody eases back into an unhurried pace that is just so characteristic of any Capistrano native.
