Laguna Beach Artists in Wonderland

From the very beginning, Laguna Beach has been substantially different it's Orange County neighbors. This area was first named Lagonas by the coastal Indian tribes that first lived here, and were attracted by two rare freshwater lagoons in the nearby canyon.
By the time the first settlers arrived the place known as Laguna Beach had more than just beautiful scenery, unlike almost all of Orange County, it wasn't part of the Spanish land grants. The first Laguna Beach real estate was started.

The Timber-Culture Acts of the 1870s allowed anyone who agreed to plant at least 10 acres of trees in the area over the course of 10 years, and live there while they grew, was granted 160 acres to call their own. This brought in some some folks interested in homesteading and the first Laguna Beach homes began to be built. Unfortunately the land was steep and too rocky for real agriculture or ranching to take much root.

However, Laguna quickly garnered a solid reputation as a beautiful beachfront resort community and homes for sale in Laguna Beach began to hit the market. Even back then when there were only mule trails and stage coaches, people from inland from such Santa Ana and El Toro would make the day-long journey to this wonderful seaside village. Some even built hasty clapboard cottages with very few embellishments, but spectacular views as summer homes and some of these still stand.

Laguna Beach in the late 1880's was the permanent home to around 15 families, but in summer, the beaches would be have rows of canvas tents from summer visitors. Laguna Beach officials estimate the city of 24,000 attracts well over 40,000 visitors daily during the summer season. Laguna Beach homes for sale never last long on the market.

This beautiful seaside resort community's status as one of the county's largest art colonies can be traced back to the beginning of the 20th century, when a San Francisco painter by the name of Norman St. Clair arrived by started painting the scenery.

When he went back in San Francisco St. Clair became a one person visitor's information and promotion company. He persuaded many fellow artists to come down to Laguna Beach. Within the first 10 years, over 30 artists had settled in this beautiful coastal community. The Laguna Beach Art Association created in 1918 still exists today.

In the early early 1930's, the local artists started 2 of the most popular annual events in Laguna Beach: the Festival of Arts and the Pageant of the Masters. Over the years, this towns reputation as a creative getaway has gathered such lumincaries as John Steinbeck, Victor Mature, Erle Stanley Gardner, Bette Davis, Tennessee Williams and Timothy Leary.

The city now has over 75 art galleries. With its natural beauty, which all by itself attracts tourists and gives artist something to paint, tourism is the only viable industry.
