Laguna Niguel is a city in Orange County California, located in the southern portion on what used to be the Mexican land grant of Juan Avila until the late 1800s. In 1959, the Laguna Niguel Corporation headed by Cabot, Cabot and Forbes took interest in revolutionizing the city  into a planned master community, making Laguna Niguel into one of the first planned community in California. Victor Gruen, an architect who hailed from Vienna, was commissioned to design the community. Laguna Niguel CA became the 29th city of Orange County in 1989.

Laguna Niguel’s name originated from the Spanish word Laguna which means lagoon and Nigueli which was a small Indian village that flourished on Aliso Creek, a stream coursing through central Orange County. Laguna Niguel is a city highly influenced by the Mexican culture, its deeply rooted history going back to the Ranchero heydays of southern California. The year was 1821 when Laguna Niguel California became a strictly Mexican territory, having the Rancho Niguel as its main source of commerce and industry. Rancho Niguel was a sheep ranch owned by Avila until 1865.

Laguna Niguel is not quite as urbanized as its neighboring cities in Orange County, but the residents and local government have chosen to keep it that way. Over a third of Laguna Niguel is allocated for airy and open spaces which defines the values of the locales exactly. This unique city element distinguishes Laguna Niguel as a progressive suburban city that highlights the importance of a sustainable and natural environment. The presence of many parks is a testament of this unanimous sentiment. To date, there are 2 community parks, 23 neighborhood parks, 3 mini-parks, a dog park, 2 county regional parks, 2 small county parks and the recently finished Laguna Niguel Skate and Soccer Park in Laguna Niguel California. The major parks are Aliso and Wood Canyons Regional Park, Badlands Park and Laguna Niguel Regional Park.

One of the most notable structures in Laguna Niguel CA is the Chet Holifield Federal Building, a one million square foot edifice that was built in 1971 for Rockwell International. Millions of microfilms documenting land agreements between the Americans and the Indian tribes of the Southwest are stored in its vaults. It also serves as the gigantic headquarters of the Western Regional Department of Homeland Security and the California Service Center of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

Laguna Niguel homes in the upscale communities have preferential access to spectacular views of the city, canyon and ocean. Bear Brand Ranch, Ocean Ranch, South Peak, Crest de Ville,Palmilla and Monarch Point are among the posh neighborhoods in the city.
