Mission Viejo has been declared as one of the safest cities in the US by a Morgan Quitno crime survey in 2007. Despite the fact that it remains one of the largest master planned communities built in the US, Mission Viejo has retained its image as a peace-loving city. With a total population close to 100,000, Mission Viejo is largely a suburban district that is rich in both nature and culture.

The land where Mission Viejo California stands is only a parcel of the 52,000 acre Rancho Mission Viejo, a cattle ranch with origins dating back to the mid 1800’s. A wealthy baron in the person of John Forster first purchased Rancho Trabuco in 1843 and added Rancho La Paz and Mission San Juan Capistrano to his properties in 1845. Eventually, he also bought the nearby Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores in 1873. When Forster passed away in 1882, two Irish immigrants, Richard O'Neill Sr. and James Flood, bought the ranches in an equal partnership arrangement. For many years, the ranch flourished – cattle breed was upgraded, land was developed further, new crops were introduced and the ranch became one of the county’s biggest wheat fields. Rancho Mission Viejo is now divided into 4 communities: the City of Mission Viejo being one of them.
