About Brea
“The City if Oil, Oranges, and Opportunities”
Brea means tar in the Spanish language.
When Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola visited what would be known as Brea in July 1769, he noticed Native Americans covered with black goo, he called them “dirty”, never realizing they smeared it for medicinal purpose.
The City is the merging of two economically booming villages in January 19, 1911 and was incorporated in February 23, 1917.
The first village, OLINDA, was founded at the beginning of the 19th century. When landowner Abel Stearns sold 1,200 acres of Olinda’s western edge to the Union Oil Company in 1894, it was said to be the beginning of Brea’s golden future.
The village of RANDOLPH, (after Epes Randolph, a Pacific Electric Railways engineer) was founded just at the south of Brea Canyon in 1908 for the oil workers and their families.
The oil boom lasted until 1940s. The next 3 decades brought about new housing development and commerce. Big changes happened in the 70s with the opening of the Brea Mall.
Brea is residence to 39,870 people, with a total area of 11.1 square mile, an average rainfall of 15.9 inches per year.
The City’s public schools have been consistent in their score, which is above the 90th percentile in state and national achievement tests.
